UMAR was founded in 1983 as a mission and ministry of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church but is a separate 501©(3) non-profit.Our Mission: to promote community inclusion, independence and growth for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through residential, employment, and cultural enrichment opportunities.People• UMAR serves more than 300 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout western NC each year.• UMAR employs nearly 200 trained staff—90% provide direct care or service.• Residential counselors in group homes provide on-site support 24/7.• UMAR has a volunteer board of 11 trustees and more than 300 community volunteers.Residential Services• 19 group homes and nine apartments in: Asheville, Charlotte, Concord, Cornelius, Gastonia, Greensboro, High Point, Huntersville, Lincolnton, Statesville, and Winston-Salem. • Each UMAR group home houses six residents.• The annual operating cost for one home is $200,000-$350,000, depending on the needs (amount of care) each resident requires.Vocational Services UMAR provides skills assessment, job development and training to help job seekers find meaningful, competitive employment. We partner with different businesses in North Carolina where our participants can utilize their strengths and skills.Day Programs/Art Centers• Day Programs at the UMAR Arts centers offer fine-art vocational services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Each center encourages creativity and self-expression through a variety of mediums. Artists also have opportunities to show and sell their work, receiving 40% commission on each sale.
