Active Plus is a non-profit organization that provides free fitness, nutrition, and mindfulness education to NYC's youth from at-risk communities. Our mission is to provide children and their families with the tools they need to live a holistically healthy and active lifestyle. We believe access to quality wellness education can create life-long change, improve immediate health outcomes, and reduce structural inequalities that threaten long-term well-being.Since 2015, our team has delivered free in-person and virtual wellness programs to children between the ages of 5-18. Through our school and community partnerships, along with our standalone year-round programming, we've served 2,271 kids and 1,345 parents.The problem: Roughly 40% of public school children age 14 or younger in New York City are overweight or obese. Approximately 20% between the ages of 5-17 are estimated to have a mental health disorder, with minority and low-income household children being disproportionately affected in both categories.Our approach: To build a team of skilled instructors, volunteers, and donors, who design and deliver programs that teach kids how to nurture their physical and mental well-being.
