When did my ‘girlhood' end? In the summer of 2017, after my freshman year of college, I realized how messy the transition out of this sweet yet surly state could be. How startling and ridiculous. The sheer force of the female experience overwhelmed me, built from memories of: heartbreak; bitter disappointments; late night calls from boys that would use me oh-so-unwittingly; complicated emotions towards my body; and lost friendships that no longer seemed beneficial. As I spoke candidly and openly about the transformative year, I recognized these conversations weren't deeply expressed amongst my group of girlfriends. Instead, being a woman in the world today - and the vast array of accompanying emotions - felt like a coveted secret. Like a shared consciousness suppressed by normative awkwardness or flimsy excuses not to overshare. There had to be a community of women mentioning the nuances, the moments in between, I thought, in addition to feminist discourse. There had to be some online site, some podcast, some newsletter that spoke frankly, sometimes comically, about how queefing during sex is worse than accidently drinking spoiled milk or how a green mesh t-shirt can sometimes be stylish. There had to be a site where women could reflect on topics like this and still be considered intellectual. From that desperate desire to feel seen, heard, and felt (without trivializing or fetishing the female perspective), Girl Soup was born.As a blog where I discussed topics such as female erotica, rejection, anger, online relationships and mental health-Girl Soup became a safe space for women to ask, complain, and make important things that have been historically undermined as "irrelevant female conversation." I wanted a space where women felt comfortable sharing opinions on politics, fashion trends, menstrual cycles, or Burger King's vegan burger and still feel like their opinions on these topics don't diminish their intellect.This site is by women, for everybody.
