Powerhouse Workshop is a contemporary arts center and art fabrication facility that supports investigation, experimentation, and collaboration across media and disciplines. Established to serve the needs of working artists, Powerhouse Workshop is the first facility of its kind in the country, providing industrial fabrication shops, a materials library, and flexible space for exhibitions, installations, and public programs. Dedicated to learning and collaboration, Powerhouse Workshop will provide access to equipment, expertise and support that encourages experimentation and risk-taking. The project builds on Brooklyn's 200-year history as a center for industry and creates a need-responsive platform and a critical new resource for artistic production in the heart of the borough. Recognized for its experience designing spaces for the arts and for its innovative approach to adaptive reuse, Herzog & de Meuron has created a design for the Powerhouse Workshop that re-imagines the 113-year-old power plant to create a new contemporary art center that meets the multidisciplinary needs of Powerhouse's program. The design revitalizes the site of the former Brooklyn Rapid Transit Power Station which was decommissioned in the 1950's and includes the renovation of the existing Turbine Hall and the reconstruction of the adjacent Boiler House building. The final building will allow for flexible workshop configurations, exhibition and presentation spaces, as well as a community space for research, exchange, and innovation. The entire project consists of a new 70,000 sq/ft addition to an existing 100,000 sq/ft facility.
