Today IMS is being used to detect the presence and type of infection.Chemical changes in living systems, or degradation of cells after death through enzymatic and microbial processes, are accompanied by the breakdown of amino-acids and production of biogenic amines. Pathological conditions in the human body may be expressed in the formation of biogenic amines, so that elevated levels of biogenic amines may be indicative of dysfunctions. IMS is a sensitive instrumental technique for detecting volatile compounds. It is based on measuring the velocity of ions (ion mobility) drifting through a gas bath under the influence of an electric field.VGTest is a novel, patented device that uses IMS technology to diagnose the three most common forms of Vaginitis: bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis and trichomoniasis. The device works by measuring the biogenic amines in the sample that are present at elevated levels when infections are present with results within one minute.
