RapidLion - The South African International Film Festival aims to be the premier marketing tool for films in the developing world. The inaugural festival will be held at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa from 12 - 19 March 2016. Films will contend for a RapidLion in various categories, including Best Overall RapidLion Film. The RapidLion award is an 8.4kg, platinum-plated statuette of a lioness in full flight atop the Hwe Mu Dua (Andinkra symbol of excellence). The award is made by R.S Owens & Company, the Chicago based company that has been making the Oscars and Emmys since 1983. World-renowned film producer, Anant Singh will be the first receipient of The Lionel Ngakane Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is named after Dr. Lionel Ngakane, the father of South African cinema. Singh's company, Video Vision has produced some of the most iconic South African films, including "Sarafina", "Cry the Beloved Country", and more recently "Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom". Video Vision also produced "Yesterday", "the first South African film to receive an Academy Award nomination." The award is named after Dr. Lionel Ngakane, the father of South African cinema.
