Dogs for Autism (DFA), a non-profit corporation, was founded in 1991 (formerly called Dogs for Disabled) and trained service dogs to assist with a wide variety of disabilities. In 1996, DFA began groundbreaking work, formalized in 2007 with the new name, to meet the challenges of autism. DFA has successfully trained canines to work as a team in families with autism, increasing physical safety, independence, and interaction with the children who so desperately need every available resource.DFA is one of only a handful of autism service dog organizations in the entire country. Even among those few, DFA is all but alone in reaching into yet untapped possibilities by targeting specific behavioral issues, both by canine assistance in the home and in conjunction with clinical Applied Behavior Analysis.Dogs for Autism has approached dog training with an innovative vision, believing that dogs can do a wide variety of tasks that most people have thought impossible. This willingness to try new things has opened many new doors to families who thought there was no hope. DFA desperately needs increased income to plan and correctly implement support for these families.
