Barstow Acres Children's center was founded in Calvert County, MD in 2003, to provide mental health services, developmental and enrichment programs for at-risk children, adults and families.BACC was founded by Sonia Hinds, a licensed nurse psychotherapist who was inspired by her experiences in mental health at Saints Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC; now the Department of Mental Health where she learned about the multidisciplinary treatment model for some of the most difficult to treat children and families.First located on Armory Road, BACC moved to 590 Main Street in 2005 where it currently resides. Services now include individual, group and family therapy. BACC fills the gap in treatment for young children, starting at the age of three where child-centered play therapy is used as the primary modality. Others services provided is social skills groups for children with ADHD, anger issues and autism spectrum disorders. Groups also include a self-esteem group for teens and a Therapeutic Summer Day Camp which has been in existence for the past ten years. We also provide parent training using Adlerian model. Enrichment programs for the community include our Annual Parent Empowerment Conference which brings together parents and professionals to learn about current mental health issues. Mental health professionals may also obtain continuing education units for licensure renewal. Additionally, we provide internships to college graduates and high school students, as well as masters level psychology majors.
