McGill Baja is a team comprised of over fifty engineering students. Our mission is simple: to design, build, test and finally race a single-seat off-road prototype vehicle. With a history dating back to 1984, we are one of the longest running design teams at McGill. Every year, an entirely new vehicle is designed and built, carrying forward the successes of the previous design. Nearly all the components of the car are designed and built by students. Each year, the team competes against over 100 universities from around the world in several competitions across Canada and the United States. The competitions are sponsored by SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers) and are attended by thousands of engineering students, hundreds of industry professionals and numerous spectators. The vehicles are scrutinized and judged by automotive experts based on their design, craftsmanship, and engineering. They are then put to the test in several dynamic challenges such as hill climbs, maneuverability courses and suspension and traction events. The pinnacle of the competition is a four-hour endurance race designed to test the limits of the vehicles. Over 100 Baja prototypes start the wheel to wheel race. Over the past four years, McGill Baja has seen its best performances to date. In 2013, the team finished 1st in Baja SAE Rochester and 9th in Baja SAE Washington. The following year, the team continued its strong performance placing 6th in Baja SAE Texas and 3rd in Baja SAE Illinois. In 2015, the team placed 16th in Baja SAE Maryland and 13th place in Baja SAE Oregon. After that, 8th overall in BAJA SAE California and 24th in BAJA SAE Rochester out of 100 universities. In 2017, we finished 24th in Baja SAE Kansas and 12th in Baja SAE Illinois. This past year, we finished 18th in Baja SAE Kansas and 13th in Baja SAE Oregon.Contact us: baja@mcgilleus.ca
