Pharmacovigilance is the pharmacological science relating to the collection, detection, assessment, monitoring, and prevention of adverse drug events with pharmaceutical products. Adverse drug events annually account for 1 million emergency department visits, 2.2 million hospital admissions, 3.5 million physician office visits and $136 billion U.S. health care costs.
