V P Media & Communications at Oral Cancer Initiative - Chicago, Illinois, United States
Oral Cancer Initiative is not just an awareness campaign. OCI offers adults free screening events nationwide through school districts and large corporations. OCI has had to interrupt live screenings during COVID-19, but we are planning virtual events and will be announcing those as we commit to future dates. Only 20%-30% of dentists in the U.S. do screenings with every regular exam. We hope our New Patient Referral Program will encourage more dentists to join our initiative. There are millions of current and past tobacco users that we must screen. However, there are fast-growing additional threats. Research has proven that a strain of the HPV virus also causes oral cancer. The incidence of oral cancer in young women, aged 16 - 25-years-old has grown among those diagnosed with HPV version 16. Oral cancer kills one person an hour in the U.S., and it may be the gateway to about twenty other cancers. Oral cancer kills as many people as melanoma each year and is now more common than leukemia.
