The Shire's estimated population of just over 22,000, is dispersed across 53,457km2. Most of the Shire's population resides in the Mareeba and Kuranda townships with the remaining 6,000 people in the many small, rural and remote communities including Chillagoe, Almaden, Petford, Dimbulah, Mutchilba, Koah, Speewah, Biboohra, Mt Molloy, Julatten, Mt Carbine, Irvinebank and Watsonville.
