Welcome to Flathead County – Founded in 1893 and located in Northwest Montana, Flathead County encompasses 3,262,720 acres that holds much of Flathead Lake, the Flathead Valley, and the Flathead River. These natural treasures, originated by glaciers, are named for the unique geological formation of a broad flat valley surrounded by mountains at the head of a deep glacial lake. A short distance from any developed area is Glacier National Park, designated hiking areas, 2 ski resorts, 8 golf courses, Flathead Lake, and Hungry Horse Reservoir. With the abundance of recreational opportunities and aesthetic values, it is not hard to see why Flathead County is the among the fastest growing, and the 3rd most populated county in Montana.Flathead County is a commission style of government. The Departments and Divisions that make up County government strive to make Flathead County a safe, healthy, and fulfilling place to live, work and play, by providing vital services to the community. From enjoying books and scenic parkland to receiving social services and peace officer protection. The County Commission, consisting of three elected commissioners, is the Executive as well as the Legislative branch for Flathead County. The county Commission is responsible for County policies, passing resolutions and ordinances, setting appropriations, setting levies for County funds, fire districts, setting of fees, rural improvement districts, special districts, and appointing residents to boards and commissions. In addition to the County Commissioners, Flathead County has eight elected officials representing various branches of government.
