Abattoir PLC! ...............the place where markets, wholesalers and events all come together Abattoir is situated in Kuregem. By the end of the 18th Century, Kuregem had become a typical rural setting, encircled by windmills, artisan breweries and wool and textile workshops. There was water there, and it was abundant. In 1890 a new abattoir and livestock market was built in Kuregem. The local authority in the district of Anderlecht granted the concession to ‘the Abattoir & Market Company of Anderlecht-Cureghem'. The Great Market Hall, a whole steel construction is supported by cast-iron pillars each separated by 10m from the other. The foundations go very deep because of the marshland underneath and are underpinned by barrel vaults of brick. These cellars under the covered market are a jewel in the crown of 19th Century industrial architecture. For a time this space was used to cultivate mushrooms and it is only since 1992 that it has been reclaimed, restored and used as a unique event venue in Brussels and Belgium Although the livestock market no longer exists, there is a modern slaughterhouse with a thriving wholesale market for all involved in the meat trade. The impressive covered market comes to life at weekends, Friday to Sunday, when local people come to shop for fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, spices, textiles......and look for bargains in the flea market. With the new Metro line, it's so quick and easy to get here. Abattoir, a place with a bright future. On Thursday evening, you find the biggest afterwork party of Brussels at Abattoir. It starts from 5 p.m. with a wide choice of foodtrucks and bars. A deejay guarantees the ambiance ! On 29 of May 2015, Abattoir will open a complete new food hall named FOODMET. It concerns 45 foodstores and bistro inside the building (amongst it 17 butcheries with an enormous variety of meat specialities). A total surface of 10.000m² new shopping experience. Unique in Belgium !
