Founded in March of 2018, Isla Vista Trading Post (IVTP) is a student run organization on the campus of UC Santa Barbara that hosts trading events where community members can come together to give and take clothing, establishing a small-scale circular economy of clothes. Isla Vista Trading Post aims to establish a more environmentally conscious and connected community through one of the most influential parts of daily life: clothing. How we dress and how we shop reflect who we are. We want to provide a platform where community members can challenge fast fashion and the need to constantly buy new.IVTP is based in the philosophy that doing good for people will inspire them to do good in the world. This is why our clothing is always free. We have a "three for free" policy at every event, where everyone is encouraged to take up to three items, regardless of if you donated clothes. We have replaced the monetary transaction of purchasing clothing with a deeper, more permanent one. When people come to an IVTP Event, they begin to understand that the value is not so much in the clothing that are giving away, but in what they can learn, and consequently DO. You could think of it as a "pay it forward" type of deal. We want to educate consumers that they have the power to change the way the fashion industry works by changing the way they spend their money. With every piece of clothing that is given away comes a sense of empowerment to change the world. We decided that we can change the world...one shirt at a time.
