Hilsea Lido Pool for the People is a community trust and registered charity (reg'd no. 1133714). HLPP took over Hilsea Lido and the Blue Lagoon from Portsmouth City Council as a community asset transfer in September 2010 on a 99 year lease. This is a massive community project - it involves every aspect of managing, developing and growing an organisation. With no funding the approach has had to be imaginative and innovative. The 67m x 18m x 4.5m pool had been closed at end of season in 2008, having been rundown and neglected for many years. A dedicated team of volunteers have worked hard to make improvements to the site, this has also involved the help of a variety of other organisations. Once fully operational, HLPP plans to deliver a full schedule of activities on site. These will include a variety of training opportunities, eg., sea survival skills, kayaking, scuba diving, long distance swimming, high board diving. Public swimming is the ultimate aim of the trust, this is the costly part of the operation - electricity, water, chemicals and staff all cost money - but we want to be able to provide opportunities for everybody.
