The Department of Sport and Exercise Science at Waterford Institute of Technology provides teaching, learning and research opportunities at undergraduate and postgraduate level. We have a community of over 650 students and 32 staff members, making us the largest academic department in the area of sport and exercise science in the country. With 32 specialist staff, we have expertise in a wide variety of fields relevant to sport and exercise that can greatly enhance the student learning experience. We offer students a broad range of undergraduate programmes in Recreation and Sport Management, Coaching and Sports Performance, Exercise and Health Studies and Health Promotion. These programmes span the health, sport and exercise science field, attracting students from all over Ireland. All undergraduate programmes involve work placement of at least one semester. The fitness instruction element of these programmes is accredited, giving student access the Register of Exercise Professionals in Ireland (REPS Ireland) and from this, international recognition. We have built up an extensive list of partners and contacts, key to both our teaching and research activities, and in particular to our work placement programmes. Currently, we offer taught postgraduate programmes in Sport and Exercise Psychology and Social Personal and Health Education (SPHE). We also offer a number of part-time programmes from level 6 to 9 in conjunction with the School of Lifelong Learning & Education for students who do not wish to undertake full-time study. These part-time short strand programmes relate to our major awards and we hope to roll out even more of these in the years to come. Students have access to a range of modern facilities including the WIT Sports Campus and our Human Performance Laboratories. Within a 5 min walk from Main Campus is the Waterford Regional Sports Centre (RSC athletics track) and the Waterford Crystal Sports Complex (swimming pool), both of which are used for classes. Most classes are timetabled in the Tourism and Leisure Building, the most recent building on campus which opened in 2009. Our taught programmes are supported by related research groups with considerable postgraduate student research activity ongoing. The department has research specialisms in physical activity, health promotion, drug and alcohol misuse, exercise physiology, nutrition, social media, physical education, sports psychology and player development. We offer postgraduate research opportunities to both masters and PhD level.
