The University of Basra is one of the largest and oldest universities in Iraq. It is located in the city of Basra, the center of Basra Governorate in southern Iraq.The university includes many faculties with different medical, engineering, scientific and literary specializations.The University of Basra was established on April 1, 1964.The study began in five faculties (science, engineering, economics, law and literature) in the first academic year 1964-1965 and accepted 816 male and female students. During its years, the university has developed a lot and has become one of the centers of scientific research in Iraq.The university now has 21 colleges containing 83 scientific departments, runs 11 advisory offices and 16 scientific centers, and publishes 16 scientific journals and periodicals.The number of teaching staff for the current year is 2527 (Masters and Ph.D.).The university grants bachelor's, higher diploma, master's and doctoral degrees in various sciences and specializations.The University of Basra had formed the first nucleus of the universities of Dhi Qar and Maysan. Where the College of Education, the College of Arts, and the College of Science in Dhi Qar Governorate belonged to the University of Basra until 2002, which witnessed the founding of Dhi Qar University. The College of Basic Education and the College of Education belonged to the University of Basra until 2007, when the University of Maysan was established. The university is a member of the Federation of Arab Universities and the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World.
