The Czech Centre is a cultural institute whose role is to promote the Czech Republic by showcasing Czech culture in the UK. The Czech Centre London opened in 1993. It is part of a worldwide network of 22 Czech Centres operating in 19 countries and on three continents. It is funded by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Czech Centre organises around a hundred events a year. It initiates, curates and organises its own large scale projects, while also working with a number of prestigious cultural institutions all over the UK. Its programme covers visual and performing arts, film, literature, music, architecture, design and fashion. As well as hosting its own events, the Czech Centre offers support for other groups organising Czech related initiatives in the UK. The organisation has stood behind several award-winning projects including six Showcases of Czech Performing Arts at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (2008, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017) which have generated tens of thousands of viewers and 4 Herald Angel Awards, 2 Total Theatre Awards and 5 Total Theatre Awards nominations for the Czech shows. The Czech Centre co-curated and organised several successful projects presenting Czech design and fashion, including the Last Fata Morgana exhibition which received the Best Country Presentation Award at the International Fashion Showcase in 2016. The Czech Centre is very active in supporting emerging Czech visual artists (e.g. Nightshift, a Czech-UK interdisciplinary art project supported by Czech Centre won the Jindrich Chalupecky Award in the Czech Republic), and has a strong record of showcasing the best of Czech cinema through its annual Made in Prague festival. The centre also seeks to further enhance cultural relationships between the UK and the Czech Republic through curatorial visits, media tours and artistic residencies. In addition to its cultural work, the Czech Centre runs certified Czech language courses and exams. In November 2017, the Czech Centre opened its own gallery Vitrinka showcasing emerging international artists and designers. The Czech Centre is an active member of EUNIC (European Union National Institutes for Culture), which it chaired for two years and through which it developed large scale international projects such as European Literature Night or The Games Europe Plays.
