Non-Profit

Founded in 1984 to respond to the famine in Ethiopia, Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) is a non-profit organization working in partnership with vulnerable and diverse organizations to overcome poverty and build healthy communities in Africa. CPAR supports community efforts to address determinants of health through access to clean water and adequate food, better hygiene and sanitation, creation of secure livelihoods and improved access to primary health care. Cross-cutting themes include promotion of gender equality, support for people living with HIV, and conservation of the natural environment. CPAR has field offices and programs in Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda, fully staffed and managed by nationals. For over 30 years, CPAR has made a long-term commitment to change in rural East Africa. Our commitment to change is based on providing access to clean water and adequate food, improving hygiene and sanitation, creating secure livelihoods and improving access to primary health care CPAR works with community members in some of the most remote rural areas in Malawi, Uganda, Ethiopia and Tanzania to implement long-term sustainable programs that are focused on real grassroots change. CPAR goes where the need is. We work with community members to provide access to life's most basic needs despite challenges that might be posed by the environment or infrastructure. CPAR focuses on key areas that respond to community vulnerabilities holistically – addressing challenges that can have mutually reinforcing negative impacts. This helps to ensure that positive change can become entrenched and may be leveraged to even greater gains. CPAR responds to five of the most important determinants of health: Food Security and Nutrition (meaning reliable and adequate supplies of food); Clean Water and Sanitation; Essential Health Services, and Building Secure Livelihoods. www.cpar.ca
