Planet Drum Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in San Francisco, California in 1973. The Foundation's mission is to promote a grassroots approach to ecology which encourages sustainable living within one's ‘bioregion' or life-place. For over 45 years, Planet Drum Foundation has led projects, produced publications, held lectures, and hosted workshops to spread ideas and activities related to "living in place" which have inspired organizations, groups, and individuals to live within the natural boundaries of bioregions. In 1999, Planet Drum Foundation was invited to Bahía de Caráquez, a small city located on the central coast of Ecuador, to collaborate on the development of an Eco-city initiative with local ecological activists and the city Mayor. Since then, the Planet Drum Ecuador project has maintained an office/apartment in Bahía in order to support the ongoing Eco-city initiative and also to develop and coordinate its own ecological activities in the region, such as the Dry Tropical Forest Revegetation Project and Bioregional Education Programs. It calls for reinhabitation of the land and reclamation of distinct cultural and environmental heritages. Planet Drum arranges informational workshops for grassroots groups, schools, local communities, etc. It provides an alternative to the exploitative industrial processes that commodify nature and threaten life-sustaining natural systems. Improving the functioning of local natural systems ultimately is a way to improve the functioning of the entire planet.
