The Oakhurst Recovery Program (ORP) offers free, long-term residential treatment for homeless men with drug or alcohol addiction. Since our conception over 25 years ago, our goal has been to restore new life to participants by treating the underlying causes of chemical dependence, as well as addiction's impact on one's emotional, intellectual, and spiritual wellbeing. One of our great strengths is that our counseling staff are men who themselves are in recovery and are gifted in helping others address addiction. Volunteers support the program with daily activities such as art therapy, yoga, and companionship during meals. This interaction and encouragement reveal a level of acceptance the men have not felt for a long time, if ever. Our Board of Directors includes members of the community and program graduates who guide our organization's strategy, finances, and therapies. With room for 10 men, each receives an individualized plan that challenges them to grow and make positive changes through exploring all aspects of their life. Counselors work with each client to become introspective, humble, and honest as each man increasingly lays claim to his own life story—no matter how painful. We celebrate with each man his unique worth as he reaches a new and healthy equilibrium. The men who complete our program and graduate are clean and sober, employed, and living independently.During 2020, with the arrival of the COVID- 19 pandemic, the need for ORP's services was even more dire. Living on the streets, with a multitude of health issues, the homeless community is especially vulnerable to the virus. Oakhurst Recovery Program provided a safety net for the men in the program delivering not only therapy for recovery but safe housing and medical care.
