Moca Café & Lounge in the heart of Downtown North Miami is a hangout for Haitian-Americans who come for Creole cooking that is a blend of Amerindian, African and French influences with plenty of pep from Scotch bonnet peppers.Named for the nearby Museum of Contemporary Art, Moca is a good place for a taste of Caribbean. It also has a full bar and offers continental dishes like spaghetti and meatballs, sirloin steak, burgers and seafood platters. The flavor of the Caribbean can be had with dishes such as griots (marinated, stewed pork chunks that are then fried until crusty), frilled strips of conch and stewed or fried goat. Entrees come with black bean soup, rice, malanga fritters, fried plantains and pikliz, a spicy Haitian slaw. Other dishes include beef and macaroni, pork chops, grilled and fried fish, roasted chicken and on weekends big hearty soups. Live music on Friday and Saturday Nights, and poetry reading on Wednesday night.
