The Island Project: Farming & Education Centre is a "not for profit" company, offering Alternative Educational Provision. The project is educationally and socially inclusive, based on a unique 4 acre therapeutic farming site housing donkeys, a llama, goats, sheep pigs and small animals. Converted stables make up our different learning zones, workshops and a large café. This environment has been created so that the students can relax in calm and less ridged learning space. The majority of students are at serious risk of underachievement and for most, conventional mainstream education has failed to engage them. Many students who are unable to cope with a classroom environment find that they thrive in more therapeutic surrounding. We provide a comprehensive programme of accredited AIM AWARD qualifications that fit in with the "Qualifications and Curriculum Framework" (QCF) as well as hands on, curriculum linked learning programmes. For the younger children we have a huge range of "learning outside the classroom" curriculum linked activities covering mandatory core subjects. We also offer informal learning and therapeutic intervention programmes in the form of arts and crafts, woodwork, IT, sports, and cooking and animal care activities. Our pupil criterion stretches from Ks1– 4 and post 16. Each student has their own ILP (individual learning plan) to enable us to facilitate the correct programme for them, depending on what target group they represent, their age and status of placement (i.e. 1-1 intensive support, small group or Group).
