The establishment of the SMF at the time demonstrated the City of Melbourne's leadership in pursuing its eco-city vision.In 2019 SMF was recapitalised and scaled, supported by Bank Australia, to drive environmental upgrades at a national scale. As a result, the Sustainable Melbourne Fund was renamed the Sustainable Australia Fund.
