SMTI is a leading developer of low-cost, scalable Thermally-Driven Heat Pump (TDHP) technology. With third-party-validated performance, these replacements for furnaces, boilers and water-heaters cut 30-50% from the cost and emissions from natural gas, propane, or oil normally used for heating in homes and light-commercial buildings. TDHPs are particularly well-suited for providing warm comfortable building heating in cold climates; however, they can operate in any temperature zone. One-third of the output heat is renewable energy because a TDHP draws heat from the surrounding (ambient) air, even when it is well below zero outside. In some applications (such as restaurants and hotels), the technology can provide heating for all domestic hot water, plus free comfort cooling.TDHPs designed by SMTI utilize the single-effect absorption cycle, which has a long-proven track record of success. SMTI's innovation is to bring it into the modern era through cost-efficient and globally-scalable designs and manufacturing methods. The company is partnering with existing HVAC OEMs who buy the core "thermal compressor" manufactured by SMTI. OEMs, in turn, finish this sealed system into final products serving existing markets. OEMs thus gain a fast, low-risk pathway to market with a major leap in energy efficiency and innovation. Gas-fired building heat equipment has not seen any fundamental efficiency improvement in more than 30 years. With global goals to de-carbonize the economy using practical and cost-effective solutions, SMTI offers a means to do exactly that. In the vast majority of the world, TDHPs can offer the lowest carbon footprint for serving building heat loads when using natural gas, propane, or heating oil. With future developments in renewable fuels and gases (bio or solar-sourced), and considering the practical economics of existing pipeline networks, TDHPs are positioned to continue offering this lowest-carbon footprint value for decades to come.
