Xi'an Medical University (XMU) is a general university under the administration of Shaanxi Provincial Government. It was originally Shaanxi Provincial Health School, founded in 1951. As a constantly developing institution of higher learning, XMU has gone through multiple stages of development, the Shaanxi Provincial Health Cadre College in 1959 and Shaanxi Medical Senior College in 1994. In February 2006, with approval of the Ministry of Education, it was upgraded to a four-year undergraduate university, named as Xi'an Medical University.The University is composed of three campuses: Hanguang Campus, Weiyang Campus and Gaoxin Campus, with a total area of 760,000 square meters and building construction area of 993,000 square meters. It owns gross fixed assets value of 1.13 billion yuan, among which teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment are worth 130 million yuan. The library houses about 1.225 million volumes of printed books and 1.7 million electronic books.Currently, XMU has 5 directly affiliated hospitals, Affiliated Hospital (Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital), First Affiliated Hospital, Second Affiliated Hospital, Affiliated Baoji Hospital and Affiliated Hanjiang Hospital, with hospital beds number about 6000. Besides, it has 20 indirectly affiliated hospitals and 71 internship bases. Among them, the Affiliated Hospital (Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital) and the First Affiliated Hospital are large-scale comprehensive Grade III Level A hospitals, organized by Shaanxi Provincial People's Government. They are also the national general practitioner training bases. Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital is the construction unit of Shaanxi Provincial Clinical Medical Research Institute, National Drug Clinical Trial Institute, and National Health Emergency Medical Rescue Team.
