Since 1985 CATRA has offered an opportunity for Capital Area residents from all generations with all types of special and typical needs to establish an atmosphere of support, respect, and health in an equestrian farm environment while offering a therapeutic riding experience to those able to benefit from it. Therapeutic riding is beneficial for individuals who present with any of a wide range of cognitive, physical, and emotional conditions.CATRA is a volunteer-run non-profit.staffed by volunteers of all ages and abilities.CATRA also offers a number of opportunities and events well beyond its weekly therapeutic riding program.Faculty and students from the capital region's institutions of higher education utilize CATRA's volunteer opportunities to augment class room instruction and to gain field experience. Students from Penn State University, Elizabethtown College, and many others frequently take advantage of the educational opportunities at CATRA. CATRA is also host to "alternative Spring Break" for university students from New England and the Mid-West.Regional high schools, middle schools, elementary schools, church youth groups, and scouting organizations facilitate field trips to CATRA to help students develop civic responsibility, embrace diversity, and improve altruism.Through various on-site opportunities at CATRA, local human services agencies are provided with means to assist their adult and adolescent clients in the fulfillment of their treatment goals including the development of productive employment skills, improvement of socialization abilities, development of altruism and empathy, and the fulfillment of community obligations. Additionally, CATRA's calendar of events offers no-cost educational opportunities to the general public. Individuals interested in learning more about equine care and training are welcome to attend any of a variety of on-site monthly workshops.
