Since 1964, L'Arche works closely with people with an intellectual disability so that each person can play their full role in society. Around the world, 152 communities, 22 community projects in 38 countries.L'Arche community will often comprise one or several households or foyers, where members with and without a disability share their lives; in addition, many communities run a workshop or day activity centre to extend the abilities of both those living in the community households as well as externs. At the heart of L'Arche communities are relationships between people with and without intellectual disabilities. A respectful relationship between people who treat each other as equal provides security, allowing for growth and personal development. Most importantly, mutual relationships foster the acceptance of each person as a unique and valuable individual. Together, we are working toward a more humane society.
