The College of Veterinarians of British Columbia (CVBC) is the statutory body created to serve the interests of the public and animals through the regulation and advancement of the veterinary profession in B.C. The CVBC's mandate is to create, promote and enforce a high standard of qualification, conduct and competence by practitioners of veterinary medicine. To do this the CVBC must set and enforce standards of practice and conduct that apply to all veterinarians in B.C.The Veterinarians Act creates the CVBC and sets out its general powers and duties relating to the regulation and advancement of the veterinary profession in B.C. The Act also prohibits the unauthorized practice of veterinary medicine by any person who is not a registered member of the CVBC. The CVBC will intervene in clear cases of unauthorized practice.The CVBC administers this mandate through the Council, which governs and oversees the College and its activities. The Council, except for public members who are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council or Minister, are elected by the members of the CVBC pursuant to the Veterinarians Act and the CVBC Bylaws.
