The Bronx Conservatory of Music was founded in 1991 by Elizabeth Thode Hoard, a 1927 graduate of the Juilliard School, where she studied piano. A long-time resident of the Bronx, she served with great distinction for forty-six years at the New York Institute for the Education of the Blind (currently the New York Institute for Special Education), and spent several years as its Director of Music. The mission of the Bronx Conservatory of Music ("BCM"), as sought by Mrs. Hoard, is to provide private music instruction of the highest quality to Bronx children and adults, in their own neighborhoods, at lowest possible tuition; thereby making conservatory training accessible to all. In fulfilling this mission, the school also seeks to develop audiences for fine music in the Bronx and to contribute to the music culture of the Bronx. The Bronx Conservatory brings the gift of music to our Bronx community. Our faculty members are graduates of some of the finest conservatories throughout the world, including New York City's Juilliard School, Mannes College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, and New York University. BCM Teachers are chosen not only for their achievement as performers at the highest level, but also for their experience and abilities as teachers. The teaching goals of the Bronx Conservatory of Music are to promote personal growth through the understanding and enjoyment of music, to develop performance skills, and to provide valuable social outlets for self-expression for students of all ages, at all levels of music experience. The Bronx Conservatory of Music engages in developing audiences for fine music throughout the Bronx. The school provides free and low-priced concerts featuring faculty and guests artists to Bronx communities in partnership with churches and educational institutions.
