HISTORY On October 12, 1978, President Carter signed into law the Inspector General Act (Pub.L. 95-452), which created twelve Federal Offices of Inspector General (OIGs), including the Department of Transportation (DOT) OIG. In the following year, DOT Secretary Brock Adams formally established DOT OIG with a determination order signed on February 25, 1979. Today, DOT OIG conducts audits and investigations to promote effectiveness and to prevent and stop waste, fraud, and abuse in DOT programs. DOT OIG also consults with Congress about programs in progress and proposed laws and regulations. MISSIONDOT OIG conducts audits and investigations on behalf of the American public to improve the performance and integrity of DOT's programs to ensure a safe, efficient, and effective national transportation system.VISIONThe United States will achieve a safer, more efficient, and more effective national transportation system because DOT OIG enhances the performance and integrity of the DOT's programs. DOT OIG also will serve as a model Federal agency by maintaining a workplace culture that values its people as it continuously improves its performance.CORE VALUES- Safety is DOT's highest priority and central to DOT OIG's identity.
