Play is the vital component in early intervention for children with developmental disorders. The founders of Polkaspot, Peggy Shnaps, Leaza Cowan and Kerry Wallace, used the 1st letter of their names, (P, L and K) and the first letters of the core disciplines, Speech Therapy, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy (S,P,OT) in coming up with their original and playful company name. All 3 have a wealth of international experience and have invited like minded professionals to complement their convenient and well located practice at 11 Orphan Street in Cape Town's CBD. Internationally, multidisciplinary Early Intervention is regarded as best practice. It has been found that in SA children are often only referred for therapy once they start formal schooling. By this stage relatively minor differences in their development have been compounded, often by an emotional dimension. This may affect the child's self esteem and impact on early learning. Research shows that early intervention reduces the duration of the child's therapy. It is widely accepted that Speech Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Occupational Therapy (OT) form the cornerstones of treatment for young children with a wide range of developmental disorders.
