Established in 2016, the Burmese Student Association (BURSA) at UCLA aims to promote awareness of Myanmar (Burma) and build a community for students who are Burmese or interested in Burmese culture. We organize cultural and networking events for our members independently as well as in partnership with our sister organizations in the Greater Los Angeles area at USC, Pepperdine, and LMU. In 2018, we helped raise approximately $5,000 to fund various philanthropic causes in Myanmar including disaster relief, scholarships for students in rural areas, free hepatitis B vaccinations, and improving a mental illness facility. We are also represented on two on-campus coalitions: the Southeast Asian Coalition and the International Student Leadership Coalition.
