OxVent was founded in March 2020 by engineers and clinicians at the University of Oxford and King's College London in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Within a week the team had designed a prototype ventilator, which was easy to use and low cost to produce. The UK government selected OxVent for the UK Ventilator Challenge and ordered 6000 ventilators for the pandemic. To meet this need, the team at the University of Oxford and King's College London partnered with Smith & Nephew medical device manufacturers to upscale for mass manufacture. Through this partnership the OxVent design was brought to clinical readiness, tested extensively, and an initial batch of devices for clinical assessment was manufactured by Smith & Nephew. The UK government no longer needs ventilators for the domestic pandemic response. The goal of OxVent is now to assist other countries by supplying our low-cost ventilators.
