Kids In Sports was founded in 1994 with a mission to provide high quality, affordable sports opportunities for underserved youth while encouraging community and family involvement through the formation and management of sports clubs in Los Angeles County. Facilitating three seasons of team sports throughout the year, each one of Kids In Sports' eleven sports clubs are managed and operated by Kids In Sports staff with assistance from trained neighborhood volunteers. Each sports club is a partnership between members of the community, parks, schools and Kids In Sports. Parents and other interested neighborhood adults are recruited to volunteer their time as coaches, team parents, and key sports club supporters. This corps of more than 500 volunteers help bring year-round sports opportunities to over 8,000 participants from low and very low-income families each year, including over 3,000 neighborhood girls. Targeting neighborhoods where most children have little access to organized sports or other healthy, adult-supervised activities when not in school, Kids In Sports works with parents, teachers and community leaders to create sports clubs in existing facilities at public parks, schools and housing developments. Over seventeen years of service, Kids In Sports' dedicated staff has provided sports opportunities to more than 140,000 boys and girls. The organization's reach continues to grow and now draws participants from over 950 schools across Los Angeles County annually.
