Bitumen Macadam or Asphalt Concrete as it is described in EN13108-1 is a mixture of aggregate, filler and bitumen and can be dense, medium or open graded depending on the end application. Macadams can be classified into three main layer categories: Base, Binder Course and Surface Course. The nominal aggregate size in a Bituminous material is always stated and is related to the specified layer thickness. The most common mix type is a dense mix in which the mix components form an interlocking aggregate structure that provides the material with good resistance to deformation. This resistance is derived from internal friction and mechanical interlock of the aggregate particles.
