The Defeat River Brewery is an upcoming 10 barrel craft brewery located in Old Town Reedsport, Oregon with a high hopes to be opened by the end of 2015. Co-owners Levi Allen and Trevor Frazier are spearheading the operation together as brother-in-laws and after 2.5 years, have completed what they feel is a full proof business plan based on worst case scenarios. The brewery will have a taproom open to the public for pint, tasters, and growler sales for those 21 and older.Why call it 'Defeat'? The name is derived from our rich local history. The mouth of the Defeat River is located at Reedsport and and is more commonly known today as the Smith River. In July 1828, fur trader Jedediah Smith led a band of trappers here exploring the area, and there was a dispute between the local Kelawatset tribe and the men in Smith's party. The incident resulted in the death of 15 of Smith's men, however the cause of the dispute is the subject of debate by historians today. Smith and three others barely escaped with their lives and slowly made their way on foot to Fort Vancouver on the Columbia River. Smith dubbed the river the Defeat, indicating that his brigade of fur trappers was "defeated" on the banks of this river. Three years later, Smith was killed by the Comanche Indians on the Santa Fe Trail near present day Ulysses, Kansas. He was 32 years old. It's unclear when the name was changed from Defeat to Smith River.At Defeat River Brewery our quality creation is the center of our direction, and our family and community serve as our guiding lights. We believe in using the freshest and best beer ingredients possible. You can look forward to trying a variety of pale-ales (one of which won a blue ribbon for at a homebrew competition in Bend), different variations of IPA's, stout, wheat beers, and even Cascadian Dark Ales a regular offerings. Eventually you can enjoy lagers, cask ale, barrel aged and experimental beers, and wild fermentation ales added to the tap list.
