Winston-Salem, NC, US • 5 - 9 Employees
Non-Profit

H.O.P.E. of Winston-Salem is a non-profit whose mission is to fill in the hunger gap for children on the weekends. This is done through deliveries every Sunday to food insecure neighborhoods in Winston-Salem.Hunger is a major problem in NC, and in Forsyth County alone, 1 in 4 children do not know where their next meal is coming from. HOPE grew from the vision of a local pediatrician when she saw too many children in her offices on Monday feeling ill due to no access to healthy food on the weekends. If a child doesn't have a healthy meal over the weekend, by the time they go to school, they are physically and mentally not ready for the learning week until Wednesday. Through a group of dedicated volunteers, donors, produce partners and community leaders, HOPE has identified areas in the community that are 'food deserts' where access to healthy, nutritious food is unavailable. With a goal of specifically building meals full of nutrition and with little sugar, salt or allergens, HOPE delivers to over 26 locations throughout the community in (3) vehicles designed to deliver healthy lunches, snacks, milk/water to children and bags of produce to adults. Each week, HOPE volunteers and local organizations help with food pickups, coordination with local food banks, prep of meals and Sunday deliveries of 1,000 meals and 1,500 lbs. of produce. Since the organization's inception, HOPE has supplied over 199,000+ meals and over 300,000 lbs. of produce. Our future goals are to build funding through grants, fundraising events and local donations to increase the output of meals supplied. HOPE is also in the process of building a home base of operations within a neighborhood in need. The goal is to create a space for future meal prep, but also a space for enrichment classes for people within walking distance. HOPE stands for 'Help our people eat' and through the generous support of our community, HOPE drives nutrition to help children feed their bodies and minds.
