The Freehold Fire Department was organized on April 20, 1872 by a group of local residents, led by Charles Richardson, who saw the need for fire protection in their community. The first of the fire companies, Good Will Hook and Ladder Company, was formed and equipped with a ladder truck, buckets, and pike poles. Members were organized, officers elected, and the town had its first legitimate source of fire protection. An earlier attempt to organize a fire department in 1855 had not been successful. Fire protection at that time consisted of a small hand pumped engine and a loosely organized group of citizens who would respond when a fire occurred.Following the disastrous fire of 1873 where the Monmouth County Court House and a large portion of West Main Street were lost, the need for an engine was evident. The town commissioners, who had supported the formation of the truck company, also saw the need for an apparatus to deliver water to the seat of the fire. An engine was purchase and members from Good Will were detailed to man the apparatus. Steamer No. 1 was formed. Over the subsequent years three more companies, Richardson Engine Company No. 2, Monmouth Hose Company, and John W. Hulse Hose Company were formed to bring the department strength to five companies operating out of two fire houses. After construction of the new municipal building in 1917, all five companies moved to our current quarters. In the early 1930's two of the companies, Steamer No. 1 and Hulse Hose Company merged to form Engine and Hose Company No. 1 bringing us to our current organization of Department and four companies: Good Will Hook and Ladder Company, Engine and Hose Co. No. 1, Richardson Engine Company No. 2, and Monmouth Hose Company. The department has operated under a Constitution and By-Laws first established in 1872 and most recently amended in 2002.
