In 2012, Nevada began a robust effort to secure the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) designation as one of seven Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) test sites established to assist with the integration of UAS into the National Airspace System (NAS). In July of 2013, the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) entered into a grant agreement with the Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems (NIAS) to provide oversight of the program management of and Nevada's bid for the test site. NIAS' board was formed and on December 30, 2013 Nevada was designated as one of seven official UAS test sites.
