When Anita Grant found herself in hospital after suffering a harsh reaction from using a so-called ‘safe' synthetic, lotion for Afro hair she knew she had to create the products she desperately needed. Anita stopped straightening her hair with harsh synthetic chemicals, began experimenting with natural ingredients from her kitchen pantry and became passionately obsessed with mixing her own beauty products. She researched everything she could about cosmetic manufacturing and began deciphering ingredient labels of various "off the shelf" commercial products designed for Afro hair. Anita went online and Googled the words "natural hair butter recipe". What came up was Nappturality's Homemade Forum where a group of like-minded people, with natural hair, talked about natural ingredients, basic chemistry, hair care tips, styling techniques, and of course recipes. Anita shared her creations with others on the forum. Soon word spread and forum members were asking to buy her products. That was 2005. A lot has changed since then. Anita Grant's ingredients are purchased directly from farming communities, and partnerships she has built with fair trade and organic suppliers. She works closely with her cosmetic chemist to create conditioners, shampoos, leave-ins, cleansers, body oils and mineral makeup. Anita's business has moved from her home kitchen to manufacturing premises in Buckinghamshire, England.
