6th Sense is a Ground Up Initiative where we serve as befrienders for children living in Blocks 244 and 245 of Kebun Baru since 2019. These blocks are under Public Rental Scheme housing and are 2-room flats. We serve around 20 children between 7 to 12 years old with fortnightly Saturday evening sessions. Our sessions have two parts - first part is an art component, and a second part is free play with the children. The art component is inspired by nature or observations on what the children usually do or would like to do. Sometimes we introduce them to different materials to orientate them and use them as a tool of expression. We strongly believe that play should be accessible to everyone and be inexpensive.Secondly, free play is grounded in our belief that the environment shapes the individual. Thus, we often bring the children out to nature parks, AMK Bishan Park or places of interest across Singapore. The children immerse themselves in free play where the children spend time playing amongst themselves. We are often catching them, helping them do miniature rock climbing or pushing them on a swing. During the session we emphasise the importance of micro moments where we observe a behaviour or emotion from a child - such as how they interact with one another, what do they say to each other. We hope to use such micro moments as a moment to encourage expression or let a child have space to reflect on what they are feeling. This is important and our preferred approach as to telling children what they should be feeling.
