The American Modeling Teachers Association was created in 2005 by teachers, for teachers to address the critical shortage of teachers with adequate disciplinary preparation in the sciences. At its core is the practice of Modeling Instruction, a robust research-based pedagogy that centers learning on the construction, elaboration and application of the fundamental conceptual models of the disciplines. This organization represents a unique teacher-led response to the need for high quality ongoing professional development and mentoring. Historically universities and school systems have determined what sort of professional development is made available to practicing teachers. This unique organization demonstrates that, given certain circumstances (a research-based robust pedagogy, well designed easily replicated system for professional development, a large, active virtual social/professional network) teachers can and will organize to promote and sustain improvement in their own teaching practice, and will organize to support the long term growth and development of members of their professional community. This evidence of teacher empowerment stands in stark contrast to the accountability-driven environment in which today's public school educators function. The mission of the American Modeling Teachers Association is to promote the Modeling Method of Instruction, support and provide Modeling Instruction training for educators and support collaboration among its members.
