I Am Trans is a movement initiated by the Global Rights Foundation to shine a light on the state of transgender persons in India, with a particular focus on the Thane district in Maharashtra. Our two central tenets are: 1. Building awareness and knowledge about the transgender community among people outside the community 2. Taking action towards creating sustainable means of living for the transgender communityOur three primary programs: Doosra Ghar (crisis intervention centre)—This is a second home for the distressed in the transgender community. Here will we provide physical, psychological and social support which they would otherwise have received at home from loved ones. Activities at Doosra Ghar will include a helpline, a short-term shelter home, medical counselling, parental counselling, legal counselling, medical and nutritional support. Lalita Bhawan (community kitchen)—This community kitchen was born due to the first Covid-19 wave. During this time, we provided meals to many migrant workers, sex workers, members of the trans community and other marginalized groups. Since then, the community kitchen has evolved into a sustainable employment opportunity for members of the transgender community. Our vision to expand into several self-owned or franchised outlets after we perfect the first one. Parivaar (support group for parents of transgender persons)— This is a support centre for parents of transgender youth. Here, our expert staff will counsel them on how they can support youngsters as they go through the critical changes in their lives. Parivaar will also support parents to face societal biases and prejudice and help them overcome their challenges. The idea behind Parivaar is to create a nurturing and safe space for the transgender child at home so that they will receive the proper guidance, education and care that they deserve.
