Codeprentice was motivated by the desire to provide a meaningful alternative to traditional software engineering internships that were getting cancelled owing to the pandemic. The problem was clear: there are many students who would like to gain meaningful experience in software engineering and there are many open source projects in need for new contributors or to be written from scratch - yet, there were no scalable bridges between the two. To the end of addressing this issue, what followed was a summer of programming, debugging, ideating, speaking to students, software engineers and professors, pushing code to open source projects and some more programming. By the end of the summer, our little initiative grew into Codeprentice - an organization that aims to mentor students to contribute to open source projects.
