Africa Water Enterprise's goal is to stop the vicious circle of inadequate maintenance and servicing, driven by unmotivated, unpaid "community" committees and to replace it with privately managed, paid for and sustainable rural water supply systems. This is an NGO that is embracing the use of innovative approaches to create a virtuous circle of reliable, cost reflective user fees, high recovery rates, exceptional maintenance and an effective major repairs and supply chain programme to ensure water supply is uninterrupted, clean and accessible, always. Local people don't have a contrived "sense of ownership," instead a local person, family, consortium have real ownership - and with that comes accountability and feedback from the customers. We would like our schemes to expand, for other local entrepreneurs to copy the ideas so it replicates across each region. Eventually we are working towards a goal of reducing the subsidy towards the capital costs of repairing or building a new water scheme. Then Africa Water Enterprises can flourish across the continent without reliance on western donors. Our ultimate goal is to bring about a change of mindset within the development community and developing countries' government and civil society, so that payment of a realistic user fee, for a reliable service, provided by small scale entrepreneurs – becomes the norm.
