Nonprofit Organization Management - Kansas City, Missouri, United States
Art as Mentorship empowers young people of all backgrounds to raise their voice using songwriting and other artistic expressions as a vehicle to instill self-confidence, discipline and entrepreneurial skills.Art As Mentorship was created in 2017 by Enrique Chi, lead guitarist, and vocalist for the Kansas City band Making Movies. Born from six years of collaboration between Making Movies and the Mattie Rhodes Center, they created a week-long music education camp for youth in an underserved community. Families would often ask, "well, what's next?" after their child was inspired to learn an instrument from the week-long camp. Art As Mentorship was born out of that need. The organization launched The Rebel Song Academy in the fall of 2018, working out of the 90.9FM The Bridge studios. Students wrote music individually and collaboratively, recording a single with the help of GRAMMY Winning producer Steve Berlin of Los Lobos. The Rebel Song Academy partnered with Barkley to host marketing workshops teaching valuable entrepreneurial skills that apply in the arts and beyond.
