Byrds Fore A Cure is the only charity golf event to benefit SMA research in the state of Arizona. We also organize and support various other charity events and non-profit initiatives throughout the state.Kyle & Lauren Byrd are nine-year-old twins in the Phoenix area who were diagnosed with SMA when they were sixteen months old. Since 2009 the Byrd family has actively fund-raised for Cure SMA and are committed to continuing help fund research resulting in a treatment and cure for SMA. We firmly believe that no parent should outlive his or her child, and with the support of our family and community, we do everything we can to help find a cure so that one day no other family will be faced with such an agonizing diagnosis.SMA is an inherited disease that causes progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. There is no cure or treatment for SMA. The prognosis for many children diagnosed with SMA is >2 years.SMA is the #1 genetic killer of young children.1 in 40 people, or nearly 10 million Americans, carry the gene which causes SMA. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) selected SMA as the disease closest to treatment of more than 600 neurological disorders.
