CCiVuiL.org is the Council to Cultivate Internet Vitality, Integrity and Liberty. Its mission is to cultivate cyberspace civility, prosperity and accountability, while upholding civil liberties.Cyberspace civility (aka cybercivility)— the purposeful extension of a foundational principle of society and law to the Internet— concerns behaviors between and among people, entities and technologies, especially acts related to cyberethics, cybersafety and cybersecurity. We are living in "a transformational moment -- a moment in history when our interconnected world presents us, at once, with great promise but also great peril" (President Obama). For example, given the Internet's global reach and the difficulties with tracing online communications, it has become the primary tool for extremists and terrorists. The tragic murders of Stephen Tyrone Jones at the U.S. Holocaust Museum and Dr. George Tiller at his church in Kansas demonstrate how viral hate online incubates and emboldens deadly bigots (SWC).Members of civil societies and entities that benefit from the Internet share responsibility for mitigating online behaviors that undermine safety and security, however, the nature and size of the Internet pose difficulties to the cultivation of cybercivility. CCiViL.org— a nonpartisan, nonsectarian coalition — exists to help, starting with digital communities, networks, and media used by members of the public that are hosted by private businesses.Through strategic partnerships, research, education, training, outreach, advocacy and other activities that promote awareness, accountability and cybercivility, CCiViL.org will co-create an Internet infrastructure and culture that fosters prosperity, responsible commerce and human dignity.
